Our client is a leader in Transfusion, Cell therapy, Blood filtration and other products in Medical Device. They are looking for an NPD Engineer with experience in their product category to be responsible for their development projects. Notice that the description has said nothing about Research. While there are some categories of the product which justify occasional research, this responsibility focuses on product line extensions and derivatives. However, this client is rigorous about serving their customers so the velocity of the development is key to their success.
Qualifications that need to be obvious on your résumé are:
Device Design Experience – Yes, you must have experience in 3-D CAD systems and how to convert their information into manufacturable components. You will be centrally responsible for the hand-off to Operations and therefore must have a solid background in Design Control, Stage Gate Processing and DFMA as critical components of the design process. You and your team will also identify and evaluate new materials, components & technologies.
Documentation – You will be responsible to ensure that all activities, experiments, trials, samples and ideas are properly documented in a research laboratory notebook. You will need to understand Patent positions of new and/or existing technology and be able to converse with internal counsel regarding IP you develop and/or compete against.
Product Launch – Responsibilities will include a smooth transfer to Operations via Product launch which means you will lead, or be involved with multi-disciplinary teams.
NPD –You will work closely with Product Management and Marketing to adapt, or develop new products in a changing marketplace. You will work independently and with management to ensure that priorities are appropriately established as well as define the scope/timeline/budget for all new projects.
Market Evaluation – This position will also be involved with the Technical evaluation of both competitive and the client’s products. This will include in-depth technical reports to be used by management as a guide to product line changes and/or extensions.
Education – Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science or Technology with the application of one of those disciplines in a Medical Device, Blood/Bio environment.
Notable Skills – You will use your communications skills in every situation from Client Facing to management presentation. The role requires experience in Team based product development so Project Management skills are critical. As in any development role, time management skills will be tested daily so your Leadership experience will be important.
